Weather Wonders

So we have to ask about the weather in Boise and how the plants and trees react to weather in the 60’s in January. When is the best time to prune the fruit trees when the trees are no longer dormant?

If you walk outside and take a closer look around, you will find that the plants and trees have come out of dormancy and put on some growth. All we can hope for is that when the fruit trees go in to bloom, we will not have a hard freeze after. We may have to wait another year to try for apricots.

Snow, Hail & Freezing Temperatures Damages Fruit Tree Blooms

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 9.21.46 PM

It was a tough night in the garden on Saturday night. We had enough warm weather to bring out some beautiful blooms on the fruit trees. Unfortunately, those blooms froze with the lower freezing temperatures, hail and snow. No apricots this year.

The good news is that the fruit trees had a wonderful winter with all the extra moisture and are in good shape to grow strong and bloom again next year. We may still have some success with the plums and peaches. Mother nature has her ways. Stay tuned….

A big shout out to Odell, who with decades of orchard experience, helped me in early March with the pruning of all the fruit trees. This professional pruning will give the trees the best chance for being healthy and prosperous.

Garden Workday & Meeting

Garden Workday – 9 April 2017 at 11:00 AM

Happy Spring!

If you would like to continue gardening with us or if you are looking for a new plot, please fill our your annual application at FORMS on this website.

Paper applications will also be brought to the Workday this Sunday and can also be found at the CABI office.

It looks like we have 95% of our gardeners returning this year, so we will only have a few plots to hand out. Please make a note on the application if you would also be interested in Liberty Community Garden as a second choice.

Mother Nature Cooperates

It was really great to see many of the gardeners today after a long, snowy winter. There were many hugs and smiling faces. It’s hard to believe that this will be my fourth season managing the garden and we are looking forward to finishing our third expansion phase by mid-summer.

Today, mother nature gave us perfect temperatures to socialize, soak in the sun and get some work done. Everyone worked in harmony and we achieved our goals for the day.

Next Workday 9 April 2017 at 11:00 PM.

Garden Plots

As we welcome the spring weather, we also welcome the gardeners back to the garden. We are getting ready for our first Garden Workday for 2017, Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Many of you have asked about a garden plot to join CABI Community Garden. We will not know if we have any extra plots until the end of April 2017. If you would like to get on the waiting list, please fill out the form on Garden Plots. Join us on Workdays to get to know us. You will make new friends and there may be an opportunity to share a plot.

Another Beautiful Day in the Garden

Don’t you love the beginning of Spring? After spending a few hours in the garden today, I’ve come to the conclusion that the extra snow and moisture this winter was fantastic for our fruit trees and bushes. Working with an expert fruit tree pruner today, we were able to get all the trees pruned and properly shaped. This will be the first year that we let the fruit develop, so we are very excited.

The sculpture had to be moved and reinstalled with 6 ft candy canes and is set up for the chill area of the garden. We are still looking for some heavy rod iron chairs and a heavy table for this summer.

Hope you had a great day out the sun. See you next Sunday at 11:00!
